Do not over-pack moving boxes this can cause them to bust open. -
The heavier the item, the smaller the moving box. -
Start packing the items you don’t need as soon as you know you’re moving. -
Pack items from different rooms in seperate moving boxes. -
Put detailed labels on tops and sides of all moving boxes. -
Do not fold the moving box tops. They must always be sealed with packing tape. -
Pack a few boxes of items you will need immediately at your new home and make sure it is loaded last on the truck so the contents will be immediately available at your new home. -
To minimize the chance of breakage, pack and unpack over a padded surface so that if you do drop an item, it will land on a cushioned surface. -
Lampshades and fine china should not be packed in newspaper because the ink can permanently stain these items. Instead, use packing paper. -
You can use linens and towels as padding to protect your items as you box them. -
Keep all parts or pairs of things together. For example, curtain rod hangers, mirror bolts and other small hardware items should be placed in plastic or cloth bags and taped or tied securely to the article to which they belong. -
Take only food items you are sure will travel well. Do not take anything perishable. In the winter months, do not take anything subject to freezing. Open boxes of dried or powdered foods such as rice, macaroni and cereals should be sealed with tape. Small containers of herbs and spices, condiments, bouillon cubes, gelatin, flavorings, etc. should be placed together in a small box before packing in a large carton. Cover holes of shaker-type containers and seal with tape. Since canned goods are heavy, the amount placed in one carton should be limited.
